I wanted to feel comfortable with this monitor and was excited when we could finally test it - anything to rest knowing SIDS was a little less threatening now that we could "monitor" the risk somewhat. Before this, we researched SIDS quite a bit and the best information we have been able to gather from the internet and our children's pediatrician is to have our babies sleep on their backs and to use some sort of fan to gently circulate air in the room.
We installed and tested the monitor using the guidelines provided in the manual to a T. Only when we turned our ceiling fan off (it was on low) did the monitor register the lack of movement with no baby in the cradle. The monitor is so incredibly sensitive that it picked up on the ever so gentle breeze of a ceiling fan (vaulted ceiling) on low. With this, the alarm never went off while the fan was on. We read that having a fan on in the room significantly reduces the risk of SIDS. Our thought is that we would rather reduce the risk than monitor it (while we search for another monitor).
We tried testing this over and over again using one sensor pad, the other, then both. All produced the same results. With a fan on, the monitor never detects a lack of movement. Furthermore, with the fan off, it registered our central AC unit kicking on as movement.
Also, the cord from the monitor pad is only about three feet long. There was no safe way to secure the monitor to the cradle as recommended, so if we loved the monitor it would have sat on the floor under the cradle.
LASTLY, during one of our dozen-or-so tests, the monitor indicated that the brand new batteries were dead. I humored the monitor and replaced them, but I had already reached a decision by this point to return it.
I wanted so badly for our motion monitor search to be satisfied, but we are back on the hunt.

Bought for my daughter when she had her first child. She was admittedly "scared to death" about SIDS. She was reluctant to admit she was not sleeping well because of her fear. The monitor eased her fear. One false alarm (their fault, not anything to do with the unit) brought them running, needlessly. They use it all the time and admit it makes them sleep better. Highly recommend.

My husband and I are able to rest much easier at night and even let our baby girl sleep on her stomach thanks to this monitor. It took us a little while to figure out that you need to have a rigid surface to place the monitor plates on (under the mattress) otherwise it won't work. Our crib came with a spring set for the mattress so we had to go out and by a sheet of plywood. That said, works great EVERY time. We sometimes forget to turn it off when we pick her up out of bed...but it doesn't forget to remind us it's still on. We have great faith in this product and will definitely continue using it with our future children.
Be advised that if you have a ceiling fan on, it will detect the air and mistake it for fine baby movement.
